Grandfather’s Wisdom

Shortly before I went off to college, my grandfather pulled me aside and offered the following bit of advice:

Be aware and protective of your reputation. A bad reputation can be acquired quickly and easily, and once attained, it is difficult and may require years to turn around. But a good reputation can carry you far beyond its investment and merits.

Now, forty years later, I have certainly had plenty of opportunity to witness and experience the truth of my grandfather’s wisdom.

But this same grandfather also once told me:

Don’t trust anyone whose teeth are too perfect.

In my years, I have learned what and who I can trust and distrust, and rarely has it turned on dental conditions. Perhaps advancements in dental care have rendered this wisdom moot.
