At a rally supporting Kamala Harris on November 4 – the day before the 2024 election — Oprah Winfrey implored the audience to vote for Harris with this dramatic declaration:
“If we don’t show up tomorrow, it is entirely possible that we will not have the opportunity to ever cast a ballot again.”
Might this simply be a case of overly-exuberant campaign hyperbole? It wasn’t delivered that way. It was the kind of hysteric rhetoric intended to instill fear reminicent of Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s 2019 prophesy of the end of the world in just 12 short years.
Oprah’s statement exhibits an astounding level of reckless ignorance. Ignorance of the multiple layers of institutional protection that sustain our republic and assure the rights of citizens – including voting.
Oprah is apparently not aware of the separation of powers in our nation, including a separate, dual-chamber legislature, or multiple layers of an independent judiciary. The United States is comprised of separate, but united, individual states, each with its own governmental structures for serving citizens. America is blessed with several branches of military and state-level national guards. Individual citizens would protest and rebel against any effort to disenfranchise them from a free electoral process.
Apparently, truth and accuracy are not on Oprah’s list of favorite things.
