The first day of President Donald Trump’s second term was marked with the signing of a whole slew of Executive Orders – some of which were overdue and others that will not survive the test of legal/Constitutional legitimacy, but for him all represent victories.
Yet, President Trump’s first day, was also marked by a significant failure.
While campaigning, Candidate Trump often repeated the promise that if elected, he would end Russia’s brutal war with Ukraine before he took office. In fact, if he had been President, it would have never started he claimed. He could end it in one day, he arrogantly proclaimed. He repeated the promise at rallies, in interviews, and in his debate with barely-there Joe Biden.

As we know, Donald Trump was elected. As we also know, the war has not ended. Russia has not withdrawn. The sovereign nation of Ukraine is still under attack and invasion. People are still dying.
Promise made. Promise broken.
Donald Trump assured us that he would end it on Day 1. He didn’t. Not on day 2 either.
FAIL
Perhaps President Trump’s administration will still play an material role in ending the war in Ukraine over weeks or months into his term, but to make a “before Day 1” promise he wasn’t likely to keep was foolish.
For all of us, do what you say you will do…and if you can’t — and it is just bombastic rhetoric — don’t say it.
